So I trotted down to see the show and it is indeed beautiful...
Martin King, a senior printmaker at APW in Melbourne, has been preoccupied by the image of birds in flight for a number of years now. And it began with an expedition to South Georgia Island, Sub -Antarctica where he studied birds in flight...
With an enormous wing span they are amazing to watch - and as I consequence - he made many sketches and documented a piece to video ... These formed an exhibition series in Sydney, Melbourne and Broken Hill in 2007 which is when I briefly worked at King Gallery when it was in Burton Street...
This year Overflow takes this subject matter further, producing an animation as part of the show - as well as paintings, sketches and his trademark large scale etches for which he is known for...
His attention to detail and the simplicity of his colours and mark making is what I love ... and how he always leaves something back - a sign of an artist that is reaching the mid career point!
It's the younglings that try to over compensate with enthusiasm and energy!! Case in point - my drawing of birds in flight that I was doing a few years ago...and which Im still doing ... for commissions! {That reminds me... I have a deadline luming!!!}
These works were all about energy, movement and flight... BIRDS ON STEROIDS... Rather than Martins which are calm and majestic!
