the aussie lesson....

Morning all...
Did you catch this little article in the Sunday papers? I caught up with them properly this morning as I was off to work at object yesterday and never get time to pour over them ... so I just caught this little jewellery article today.
It seems that through the huge efforts of Diana Morgan, an Australian designer, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris have just started to acquire some beautiful and significant pieces of contemporary jewellery for their permanent collection. Big news and very exciting for the local jewellery industry that's for sure.....

Sometimes it only takes the motivated efforts of one enterprising person to put a whole industry on the map and it seems that in this instance Diane has done just that! Names such Julie Blyfield, Marian Hoskings, Mari Funaki, Linda Hughes and Robert Baines can now start to be recognised by European artists, designers, and locals alike, which is exciting news for the industry here, who sometimes miss the accolades that they sorely deserve....

Good on her I say! Its so inspiring .... It seems that until recently the only Australian designer they had heard of and acquired was Marc Newson...and he is not even a locally based jeweller or designer these days.... So its a huge learning that these Parisians will be getting about what we make, how we think and what are our aesthetics are!

If you are interested in seeing some new jewellery talent, Emily Hunt's first solo exhibition at Metalab in Surry Hills opened last Thursday night, and by all reports it is an amazing show! Emily prefers to use materials such as silicon, thread and beading to assemble her intricate neck pieces, displaying again why Australia is producing such amazing contemporary jewellery!
Worth a look if you are up Crown st way...

And if you are looking for an opening to go to this week... Its has to be the grand opening of Gaffa's new Clarence st premises this Thursday, with their inaugural exhibition 'Fidelity' in the main space.
Gaffa has moved into the old 3 storey police station in Clarence st near Town Hall, and on Thursday it will unveil its exciting new projects such as a 1st floor jewellery studio where they will hold workshops, 3 gallery exhibition spaces on the ground floor, and a contemporary jewellery and design store in the basement... with a new cafe to boot! It will be a brilliant night for the design industry on Thursday and a great exhibition to start the next chapter with....

I may see you there!
