Ready...set...go!!

Well...it's all a go-go - as 12 artists installed their work at Gaffa gallery for the Le Fil (the thread) exhibition which opens tonight!! It was such a good day ... we all were organised and it all flowed without any stress.

And let me tell you - it is such a strong show!! Kath Fries has done such a fantastic job - from choosing the artists, making her own work and compiling the little zine that will accompany the show and be on sale at Gaffa...

Here are some behind the scenes shots from the install... They give you a good of what the show looks like...

Enjoy!

Two works from my series - Friedrich{A Story} 2009 The Storm (on left) + The Inquisitive Little Owl no.3 (on right)

On the left is the little painting The Dusk + on right The inquisitive Little Owl no.4 2009

On the right you can see Hannah Bertram (Melbourne) who was installing her dust and ash work floor drawing from the series 'An ordinary Kind of Ornament' .... More of her work can be found at Dianne Tanzer gallery and on this link

Love love love this quirky work from artist Jade Pegler (Wollongong)... Each character is unique and has such a personality that I was intently studying each one, trying to flesh out how it was made... As she says:

'I find satisfaction in constructing these 'curiosities' from material that are so familiar, investing them with a life of their own...these fictions are meticulously crafted from the dross of the everyday.'

In this image is two canvas works by Shannon Johnson and, hanging above, is the long red line of recycled red fabric from Kath Fries that weaves its way around the space....

Owner of gallery - the lovely Miss Kelly... and next to her is more of Kath's red thread work...

The amazing installation of Linden Braye (Sydney)....
Quirky, original and so so detailed - as each element has been hand -crafted!

Jade looking at my little installation of works!

Mel Young (Sydney) and her beautiful pink pieces from the series..Take a ball of thread...

My favourite piece in Mel's series is the neckpiece in the foreground of this shot...yum!! Each piece is meticulously weaved, sewn, manipulated, pinned.....There is so so much work that its only when youre up close and personal, you can see each thread...
As part of Sydney Design 09 Mel is conducting a workshop at Metalab Gallery!! So if you're keen to see how they are made and try your hand at making a piece of wearable art... check out the link!

Next to Mel is the work of Sophia Egarchos (Sydney) .... These voluminous and textural 'paintings' are a nod to the world of fashion with all its colour, pattern, and techniques of pleating and shirring....

This is an idea of what the Le Fil zine is like... It is 31 pages of image +text about the show and the artists involved. It also carries the thread motif beautifully with its binding of red thread.... hand done by the amazing Kath + helpers!!

It contains a brilliant essay by Jane Llewellyn who was the former editor of Australian Art Collector. Jane has fleshed out the central themes located in the work of the 12 exhibiting artists and has quietly constructed a beautiful theory that the diversity found in the show with all the old and new media is a metaphor for diversity and fragility located in our ever changing society... love it Jane!
Hope to see you on Thursday but if not the show runs until the 11 August
Have a great weekend in the sunshine .... and one last little reminder.... the Surry Hills markets are on Saturday 1st Aug!
