Renegade crafters tag Darlo....

Yesterday I was given a tip by a mate that Darlo had been tagged sometime during the week by a knitter...
Strange conversation to be having I know but this is the stuff that weird people like me and my art buddies do from time to time....
But she was indeed right...as we went on a recognisance mission found a signage pole with a cute little outfit on it made out of wool!!

Earlier in the week SMH warned that the founder of Knitters Please from the U.S. Magda Sayeg has flown into the city and was about to unleash her knitting needles onto an unsuspecting city crowd... and sure enough she delivered....! It was such a fun little surprise to find and it is definitely becoming a popular pastime for some closeted crafters- such as local renegade knitter Denise Litchfield - who has tagged signage poles in St Peters, Newtown + Rozelle in the last 6 months ...

Knitta groups can also be found on Wikipedia - such is the popularity of these renegade knitters and local writer and PHD student Emily Howes has started to give the movement more levity with her writings and talks on the subject!
I just think it is totally brilliant and if it gives the locals a smile on their walk home from work then it is definitely worth while...and you know me...if they are adding more colour and texture to the grey streets of the city then I am all for it!

One other notable thing that I have enjoyed discovering over the last week is Hazelhurst Regional Gallery in Gymea...Now Gymea is not really regional but it is alittle drive out of the city and down into The Shire - a place i have not been to in many moons!
But Hazelhurst is a space that I had heard so many good things about over the last few years that I had been really eager to get there... and it did not disappoint! Especially when the exhibition showing at the moment is the Works on Paper 2009 Prize which always has some notable artists entered! This year the prize was taken out by a massive Brett Whiteley-esque work by artist Locust Jones.. The drawing was called 'Ride it till it dies' 2009 which is the image posted below... I wasn't so sure about it but it definitely makes an impact on the space!

The work below is by Nickolas Harding and it had to be my favourite... After seeing his solo show at Rex Irwins not that long ago, it was nice to see his work again .. This charcoal drawing was really textural and lush... and completely complex! Would have taken quite a while to do...

And speaking of complex... the drawing above is by Gosia Wlodarczak who's work I am completely fascinated by... It is a style that is totally hers and to me ends up looking like a stream of consciousness - as it looks like one continuous line that moves around the page to form these little observations of things that are around her at the time of drawing....
The piece that was exhibited in the drawing show 'I Walk the Line' at the MCA just recently was actually a performance piece commissioned by the MCA for the show... Guests were asked to dinner in the gallery space, and as they ate Gosia, drew around them- on the table cloth!
An image of the performance and the final table drawing are below...

Her work is well worth catching and the prize closes on the 16th August -
More exciting is the next show at Hazelhurst which is a survey exhibition of one of my favourite Sydney artists Idris Murphy...
It is the 35th year of his studio practice and the gallery is honouring the occasion by looking back at some of his favourite pieces... King on William Gallery will also host a solo show of Idris' more recent paintings next month opening with an informal talk on the 8th Aug. ...
I will see you there!
