Does anyone remember this image from last year???
It was of a knitting installation called 'A Knitted Convenience' by Denise Litchfield that was part of Sydney Design 09 in August . Denise, a guerrilla knitter from the inner west, decided to cover an old toilet block, situated in the centre of Taylor Square, with huge knitted panels in order to bring colour, fun and texture to the inner city. It was a great piece of work and was enjoyed by many curious locals for about 2 weeks....
Well on Thursday Denise was featured in the Feb edition of The Sydney Magazine... a sign that she is making waves and achieving some much deserved attention for her knitted 'graffiti'!
Its so great to see that Sydney is starting to embrace some different forms of street art; something that Melbourne has embraced for such a long time that graffiti, poster art, conceptual installations and laneway art are now part of everyday life in that city....
Sydney is lagging in a big way in the art department, especially in the inner parts of the city, and if Denise and her guerrilla knitters can make some sort of mark on the city, then its a huge victory for freedom of expression and creativity!!!
"My mother was the person who taught me how to knit when I was a girl but I stopped talking to her in 1992. We reconnected when she said she'd help me with A knitted Convenience. I didn't think Id ever have that relationship back after so many years but I do now.
Denise then goes on to talk about what she would like to knit over next and she mentioned this sculpture by Ken Unsworth at Kings Cross called Stones Against the sky. Now, this is the sculpture that many many people detest and call shit on a stick!! Harsh I know but true...
So I reckon knitting over it may give it a new lease of life and help its sad public image?!
What do you think?
I love this piece by Ken that is owned by the Art Gallery NSW... I would love to see Denise incorporate a knitting component into this art piece!! Its such a beautiful artwork that is light and airy and yet is composed of heavy stones suspended on wires....
On another wee note....
I just received this beautiful image of a painting in process by the amazing artist Nuna Rupert in Ernabella. My mate who is running some of the facilities at the artists' centre in Ernabella sent it to me as she knew I would love to see the colour and texture...
Which I did! Thank you Ruth.... The green is so beautiful and it is such a big piece of canvas that it will look so impressive when it is completed and hung up on a big wall! Probably in a big home in Europe or America!

In the short article Denise talks about her work and how knitting started out as a way for her to alleviate the stresses of her daily life, and from there it grew into an obsession and a way for her to reconnect with her past...

Knitting is about connection."
