In a new light....

There are times when you just know...
You walk into a space to view an exhibition and it takes your breath away.
You love it all as it has the colours, textures, depth, drama, and good curation, to capture its concept. For me this happened a few weeks ago when I walked into work at Object and went up the stairs to the project space to look at the Yuta Badayala (In a new light) exhibition.

The exhibition is the culmination of a cultural and sustainable and project between Sydney design group Koskela and the Yolngu artists' from Elcho Island in the Northern Territory.

As you can see from the wall text above, the exhibition is a range of light shades that have been weaved using traditional pandanus and bush string which symbolically weaves the traditional stories about land and culture from the Yolngu peoples... Each artist was asked to interpret their story using the pandanus and the light shade fitting, designed by Koskela.

Sydney design group Koskela was established in 2000 by Russel Koskela and Sasha Titchkosky, and over the last 10 years they have successfully run their company, designing products for many well known projects such as Brisbane International airport and Rockpool Bar and Grill. In recent times Russel and Sasha have moved into collaborating with other Australian artists and designers to provide new ways of supporting our local arts industry and the community at large.

With this new light project, Koskela hopes to provide a new income source to the Elcho Indigenous weavers through the production of these beautiful light artworks. And with the way these pieces look in the project space, I'm sure this collaboration will be a success both locally and internationally!

In the exhibition the feature wall has been painted with chalk paint and a beautiful line drawing of a pandanus tree has been rendered, to give context to the origins of the Yolngu peoples homelands, and the materials from which the weavings have been made....

I love this image of the opposing wall, with all the lights staggered across the space... with a comfy chair in the back corner so you can sit and take it all in....

My favourite thing in the whole show is all the shadows that are reflected onto the walls from the light and the weaving lines.... The textures are so beautiful and it does give the space another dimension....making all the pieces stand out and lending alittle drama to the installation...

If you would like to have a gander at Yuta Badayala...
It's showing at Object Gallery until March 28th....
Well worth it if I do say so myself... But if your'e out of town, I hope Ive given you a good idea of how great this exhibition truly is...Let me know if you enjoyed this tiny virtual tour!!
