colour wheel...

.... in the flesh!
I swear this installation is like a tiny shrine for me....
Its colour.....its pencils....and its all about people and how they use the humble art material!
The project, exhibition and blog is called Much Lead, and it was instigated by Felicity Gartelmann and Claire McCaughan from Sam Crawford Architects in Surry Hills.

These two lovely women were inspired to search out people who use the humble pencil in their creative projects, and so asked school kids, designers, artists'....anyone and everyone....for pencil donations of any kind. The pencils could be chewed at both ends, whittled down to their last bit of lead, older than your grandparents or brand new from the art supply shop! It did not matter...! What mattered was that they had enough of them to create this beautiful arc of colour....

Its beautiful don't you think?
Each pencil was strung individually onto a wire grid that hung from the ceiling....
In colour groupings...
I love the texture of it too!
You just wanted to run your hand underneath them all!
I did...!
It immediately reminded me of Ken Unsworth too!
In the work Suspended Stone Circle II Ken strung up heavy stones and positioned them into a floating cloud....that was exhibited at the AGNSW for many years...

I also love that the work looked different from every angle, so you wanted to walk around the space and explore...

And finally....
Each and every label was displayed on the stairs to give a warmth and a 'human aspect' to the installation in Object Gallery's Project Space upstairs. Each bundle came to Claire + Felicity with a tag that stated who they were, what they did and what they used their pencils for...

And in amongst all the labels there was one...
tiny one....
tucked in...
and inconspicuous...
But I found it!
Ta da....
Much Lead is showing at Object Gallery's project Space until Sunday October 10 which is THIS Sunday! So you better get your skates on if you want to catch this beautiful installation!
