Its playtime....

yeah....
after such a busy weekend
it is definitely time to unwind and play!!!

Alittle while ago while in the studio I had this great idea... - theyre all great ideas to begin with- but i had this great idea to construct a sculpture using Cuisenaire rods! Does anyone else remember those coloured wooden rods that we used to use in primary school to learn about math and in particular fractions???? Random thought I know but this flashback felt exciting to pursue... and so I started a web search and sure enough I found that shock of shock REMO general store sells them!

Ahhhh REMO..such an Oxford st institution in the 90s with that great store that they had on the corner of Taylor square...do you remember it? Oh I loved it... It was situated there when I was at COFA and was discovering Oxford st as a young and extremely naive art student..learning the ways of my new neighbourhood! Well REMO was always a great place to go into and play!! It was so interactive with so many unusual and odd toys, gifts and brick-a-brac, with a brilliant cafe in the basement...

Oh I missed it when it closed years back...

Well....when I found out that they had the cuisenaire rods for sale on their website I also found out that they have a new store! Yes! It is true...after all these years they are now situated on Bondi Road... well worth a visit I reckon!

And while you're there have some fun in the toy department!

Be sure to reminisce...a little!

Back to my sculpture... well it seems that someone has beat me to it...! It seems as though Vogue Living has cottoned on to the wave of new artworks using toys - and sure enough made a feature page of them in the Aug/Sept. 2009 issue!! And the local artist Lucy Barker was one of this new breed ....

She is from Avoca Beach and works in all manner of materials...
But its the large scale Cuisenaire pieces that I love... like this piece below!

Ill look forward to seeing them in the Sculpture by the sea exhibition at the end of the year...

Ahh playtime...

Good at ANY age!!
