Or so they say....
The weather..money...fortunes...all experience ups and downs.
And even though in this moment in history we all believe ourselves to be infallible and indestructible, I have definitely learnt that everything must ebb + flow... in order to create balance.
A few nights ago I watched the most brilliant documentary from the BBC entitled The great contemporary Art Bubble and realised that even the art market is getting a hard dose of much needed reality! It was a truly brilliant expose from art critic Ben Lewis who has a habit of ruffling peoples feathers and getting down to the hard brass tacs of any given art topic.....
In this instance it was the secondary art market - with special attention given to Sothebys and some of the biggest hedge fund millionaires - who thought they were onto a good thing by diversifying their money and sinking it into Damian Hirsts', Andy Warhol's, and some truly horrible paintings that defy even mentioning...
These men with no real knowledge or idea of what they like decided with the help of the auction houses and some of the worlds biggest galleries to inflate the worth of some of these art pieces and try and make some big big money ...
Well...
what goes up must come down and with the GFC, so came the end of the art money scam ..! And Ben was there to document it when it truly burst in London last year...
Its worth seeing this docu for a laugh and to see the craziness of this artificial art world that has nothing to do with art itself....
It is good timing actually as Art Sydney 09 open this weekend... at the Royal Hall of Industries at Fox Studios... Every year this event tries to give Sydney a taste of what is happening in the art world in Sydney... In actual fact it is a promoters dream..and an artists nightmare..
I have experienced it to be alittle harrowing and have never found many good galleries or artists out there... But I guess its up to the individual! That's me trying to be diplomatic!!
If you truly want to see art in Sydney give me a call and we can go and do some walk tours of Darlinghurst, Paddington and Redfern... Ill show you a few places where you will see some truly great art...
