And the timing could not have been any better as I fumble through the first chapter of not one but three books.... And I cant seem to get any further!
You know that feeling...when your not sure if your liking the book enough to continue SO you juggle...and start another one in the hope that one of the titles will GET you??
Thats been me in the last few weeks...
And so this week I was at that stage of trawling through the magazine aisles at the news agency for a little bit of a distraction! Like a child grabbing for things off the shelves in the supermarket I was looking for that certain type of magazine with a beautiful front cover..... and viola!!
Dumbo Feather appears...
I love this mag or 'mook' (magazine/book) that is a little off-centre. From its layout to its long interviews Kate {the editor} truly lets you absorb a persons life and their influences and perspectives on anything and everything!
But for this issue it was the colours and textures of this shaggy mop that got me!!
Its anchored in the ordinary...the everyday...A shaggy mop on a nondescript floor. Its rough and scratchy and the colours are old and lived in... And there is a strange beauty in the nice circular pattern that is being formed through the white painted surface...
It immediately reminded me of one of my other favourite magazines... Colors...that is produced in Italy. It has been around for simply ages and it covers the world through another lens.
A little like McCurry's images that speak of colour through a cultural perspective - Colors looks at the hues found through the everyday and ordinary. Sometimes the images are so intense that it is difficult to focus on them properly... they give you a tough time and a certain type of truth and venerability!
But there is beautiful in that for me... a history, a story + a life that is far from ordinary...
But its all in the details....
Switch.....
Just been alerted to a fantastic event that will be happening this weekend as part of the Art+About festival. Its called The Big Draw and its a huge drawing event where anyone can try their hand at placing a mark on any surface in any material...
So you may like to chalk on the pavement, life draw a body or finger paint on the floor surrounded by kids!!
Its on this Saturday 10-5pm at The National Art School Darlinghurst...
Enjoy!
