t r a n s i e n c e ...

In 2007 Sydney lost one of its premier spaces.
Losing another gallery is nothing new for this city but the loss of two Sherman galleries... Goodhope + Hargrave was always going to reverberate through the arts community in a big way. Dr Gene Sherman was a noted figure in the Sydney arts scene and for 21 years she provided the public with top exhibitions by some of this countries great artists'. Her stable was significant. Tillers, Atkins, Bedford, Johnson, Laurence, Parr Guan Wei...the list went on and on...
So when the announcement was made that she was moving on and the galleries were to be closed we all knew that things were going to be different. Artists were to find new representation and Gene was to move on. But she always insisted that in some way, shape or form she would remain within the arts.... but in a new role.
Well Gene was true to her word and in 2008 The Sherman Foundation was established and over the last year The Foundation has become a space where Sydney can experience emerging art by some of the most talked about artists from here and abroad.

Opening this coming week is a show that Im excited to experience. It is by Charwei Tsai (Taiwan), a young talent who is really making her mark in places such as Paris, New York + Taipei. The piece that she will show in Sydney is called Water, Earth + Air and it will explore 'the cyclical relationship between nature, art, politics, religion, culture, symbolism and ethics.'

With each work Tsai writes Buddhist verses onto surfaces such as ice, plant life and food in order for the audience to watch it slowly melt, perish or fade into nothingness. The whole process is taped using slow lapse photography but to watch the actual work disappear is an interesting prospect.....

For me it all speaks of time and the transient nature of existence which is something that Ive been thinking about in my new series Friedrich {The Light} .... where ceramic boats crumble and dissolve into bodies of water...

Anyway I think it might be a lovely show to check out if you're in the Paddington area... And if not Charwei produces a zine in New York called Lovely Daze that you can check out on line at a brilliant online artists' publication site called Printed Matter (NY)...

Issue 6 is out now.... entitled A rose is a rose is a rose....

Charwei Tsai will also be presenting work in The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT6) from 5 December 2009 to 5 April 2010 at the Queensland Art Gallery Brisbane. Im planning a trip up there to see it next year for sure!!
