play nice....!

Did your mum ever say this to you when you were growing up?
Mine did....
especially since... a) my brother and I are only 17months apart and so grew up like twins...
and b) we shared a room together for most of our childhood!

My brother and I were close when we were growing up, and for the most part we played many games together; from dress ups to star wars, cubby house and board games, we were pretty good. That is until one of us got upset! Then all bets were off and we would fight it out till one of us was hurt...emotionally or physically..whichever came first!

Oh dear.... childhood is fun.
And its only until we reach adulthood that we realise that these lessons are important to learn in order to be level headed, mature and well adjusted when we become big people! Well I think my brother and I are still getting there...{only joking!!}

Seriously though... my life lessons about sharing and playing nice have come up a lot lately as Angela and I start to do some long and intense sessions down at The Primrose studio, as we head towards June and the end of our time down there.

Can you believe its mid April? I cant... and last week I realised that Angela and I were past the 4 month mark and were heading or hurtling towards our end point and THAT exhibition on June 4th !

Sharing a studio space has been interesting for me and my work as I haven't experienced the sharing of creative space since my uni days when COFA would throw 10 art students into the space of a bathroom and say 'deal with it!!' It was tricky and of course there were a few 'incidents' where people would not play nice! I was a fresh faced 19 year old in my second year and was pretty scared of the mature age students there. So I stayed sh tum!
But its different now... I feel like I'm pretty fair with the sharing thing and have realised that something fantastic can come from seeing someone else work and be creative...

That seems to be the case with Angela and I, and our work has started to influence each other in a good way... Case in point Angela's work with sticks and nests {image above} that seems to have moved into my drawing style for the line work in my large landscape paintings, like the one below...

I love this huge circle of sticks and twigs that Angela has found on site down there on the bush track... They have now been made into a nest that will be placed on top of an old silo/extractor ruin that sits outside the studio... It will be an installation piece for the exhibition that will be all lit up and look amazing!

It's interesting to look at our desks too!
Mine is all about drawing tools, colour and paper...

Whereas Angela's is all about wire, hard gloves, pliers + diagrams...

I hope you play nice this week ....
in the shared activities you find yourself participating in...
Whether it be at work or at home..
I hope you find a little magic in your shared experiences....
